A hilarious romp through history, The Sphinx Winx is a musical comedy misinterpretation of the classic love triangle among Julius Caesar, Cleopatra and Marc Antony. With the kingdom of Egypt horribly in arrears to the Roman government because of Caesar's frivolous spending on lavish gifts for his Queen of the Nile, Marc Antony is brought in to ascertain the cause and mete out justice. When the court's Soothsayer mistakenly forecasts that Antony will fall in love with Cleopatra, he unwittingly sets into motion a series of events the likes of which won't be found in any history books! A romantic, mirthful musical comedy, The Sphinx Winx is a page out of the golden age of musical comedy.

History

The Sphinx first winked in May of 1952 at Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA. During the 50's and 60's, student-written and produced musicals were "king" at the College. But while some collegiate musicals went quickly to the professional stage, The Sphinx Winx went into a trunk; and there it slept for more than fifty years.

In late 2006, librettist Bob Keuch resurrected the work, carbon paper and all; and recognizing the promise of the show, contacted the other authors. Ken Hitchner Jr. agreed to mastermind the effort, and with the help of Bob, Phil Capice, and Ken's wife Anne, reworked the material. The team reduced running time from 3 hours to 90 minutes, and cast size from 24 to 6. Ken eliminated six songs from the original score, and wrote seven new ones. Major surgery was performed on the libretto.

It was then that the writers decided to go for broke and take the re-imagined work into New York City. They held an Actors Equity Showcase in 2008, and two Staged Readings, one in March 2010, the other in January 2011. The result? A 2011 Off Broadway production of The Sphinx Winx.
